Astronomy today is a popular and enjoyable hobby as well as a vital science making new discoveries every day. With old and new discoveries, space missions, current events, videos and photos, astronomy is a hobby that can fill countless hours. It can also be a lot of fun. So let's take a look at some of the latest and greatest.

On any day meteors are a key element of astronomy today for that day. The last half of 2008 was no different as meteors were certainly on the menu. Taurids in Leonids were featured in November. Into was a full moon in December washing out the Gemenids. Don't fret. Whereas the peak only happens for a short time meteor showers continue for as much as two weeks before and two weeks after the peak. So people can still see the amazing view.

In 2008 a return to the moon was on people's minds very often in astronomy today. The talk is of this as a world wide effort rather something any one country or agency would endeavor to accomplish. It may even result in a moon colony. Imagine that. Space 1999, a TV show from the 70s, may be about to become a reality.

Space garbage, a used up tank, was often discussed when people talked about astronomy today. Its long orbit had finally decayed to the point it would fall to Earth. Some people were concerned that pieces might fall into populated areas. But thankfully that didn't happen.

Hubble was probably the biggest news in astronomy today in 2008. First the telescope was damaged when some instrument control and data formatting modules failed in September. Those were brought back on line in October. After recovery, Hubble snapped the first visible light pictures of a planet orbiting a distance sun. Hubble telescope sure had a full year.
